Toy Story Land Update: Everything You Need to Know

If you are anything like me, you are extremely excited that Pixar’s Toy Story is finally getting its own area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Toy Story Land is an immersive area that will shrink guests to the size of a toy and allow them to step into Andy’s backyard. Officially announced back in 2015, we did not have many details on this new land. Now just approximately 6 months away, we pulled together all of the internet knowledge to give you a full report on exactly what you can expect from Toy Story Land.

When is it Opening?

It was officially announced at the D23 Expo back in July that Toy Story Land will open during the Summer of 2018, but we haven’t received any more official details about this new area’s opening date since. What we do know is that over the past few months, Disney has made significant progress on the land, with its major attraction installed and even some landscaping added. Disney continues to say that Toy Story Land will be open during Summer 2018. While this could change, Disney is typically on schedule with projects like this. In my opinion, Disney looks right on track to have construction complete by Summer 2018. More on that in our construction update below.

What Attractions Will be There?

Toy Story Land features two new attractions and will re-incorporate the existing Toy Story Midway Mania attraction. The 11 acre area at the back of Hollywood Studios is located next to the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land that opens in 2019.

Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky Dog Dash is the largest attraction in the new land. Disney gave us a great look at this new coaster with a full 3D model back in September. This coaster, which almost looks like a launch style coaster, will zip guests around the land in a larger-than-life Slinky Dog. The final pieces of track for Slinky Dog Dash were installed back in August and a video of that milestone can be seen below. Disney is still putting the finishing touches on the scenes set around this attraction. Giant characters stand on toys around the track.

It seems that Disney has put high priority on finishing this attraction first. While this ride features few frills like 360 loops or sudden drops, it appears this coaster will be very fast, fitting its name. Disney has already installed a majority of the props and toys around the track and has installed one of the Slinky Dog trains on the track for initial testing. Giant Jesse, Rex, and Buzz characters are already in place near the ride. Disney will continue to give us inside looks at this coaster as we get closer to opening.

While Slinky Dog Dash seems to get most of the attention, mostly due to its construction progress, Alien Swirling Saucers, a brand new attraction for Walt Disney World, is not far behind.

Alien Swirling Saucers will put guests in a spinning vehicle at the hands of “The Claw”. These rocket shaped toys were showcased with the 3D model at Hollywood Studios and show a somewhat similar ride vehicle to that of Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree which can be found at Disney’s California Adventure at Disneyland Resort. Riders will rotate quickly while toy planets and satellites rotate around them with a new “Space Jazz”, created just for Toy Story Land, playing in the background.

We expect the ride to be very similar to Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, which can be seen below:

Toy Story Mania

The, what I consider to be a, classic attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting a bit of retooling for the new Toy Story themed area. This 4D shooting ride allows guests to blast moving targets for points and play against other in their car as well as all guests at the park. The ride features several screens with different carnival style games featuring your favorite Toy Story characters. Recently, Disney expanded this attraction, adding new queuing areas and a 3rd track to increase capacity. Now, Disney is moving the attraction’s main entrance from Pixar Place to the middle of Toy Story Land. It is rumored that the current entrance area will be closed off as soon as Toy Story Land opens to make more backstage area for Cast Members.

In my opinion, this entrance is much more appealing than the current brick entrance. I’m also hoping that adjusting the queue to begin inside of Toy Story Land will also bring a more separate line between stand-by and fastness lines. This is currently somewhat confusing. Ultimately, this attraction has always been incredibly popular and it will only grow with the opening of Toy Story Land.

Restaurants and Merchandise

While we don’t know a ton about what merchandise and food offerings will be present in Toy Story Land, we have received some information about one quick service restaurant coming to the area.

Woody’s Lunch Box is a small quick service restaurant in the shape of Andy’s lunch box and thermos. According to Disney Parks Blog, the restaurant will

…serve up tasty meals and old-fashioned soda floats. The Walt Disney Resort will partner with Mini Babybel to bring this location to life

While it doesn’t seem like Woody’s Lunch Box will have a bunch of food options, I think it will give guests a nice snack inside of Toy Story Land.

We expect to hear more from Disney and Disney Parks Blog about merchandise and potential food carts as we get closer to the area’s opening next summer.

Speculation about when Toy Story Land will actually open leaves many comparing it to Pandora: The Land of Avatar which opened close to Memorial Day in 2017. Could we be in for another early Summer opening at Walt Disney World. This strategy could increase traffic to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a park that is currently undergoing a lot of upgrades with The Great Movie Rides transforming to Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge set to open in 2019. Any way you look at it, We are extremely excited for what’s to come at Walt Disney World.
